Jean Monnet, called the Father of the European Community. A brief timeline summarises how and why the Jean Monnet Foundation for Europe was established in Lausanne in 1978. It was the outcome of the convergence of two paths, initiated by the meeting of Jean Monnet and Henri Rieben in 1955.

Jean Monnet establishes the Action Committee for the United States of Europe, which will play a primordial role in the conception, signature and ratification of the Treaties of Rome, as well as in the development of European integration, culminating in the Conference of Heads of State and Government.
