The Long March was a crucial event in the rise of the Chinese Communist state. Facing annihilation from Chang Kai-shek's Kuomintang (KMT) Army, the Communists retreated some 8,000 km (4,960 miles) in 370 days. Although a tactical defeat, the retreat allowed Communist forces to avoid destruction while the KMT battled the Japanese. Mao Zedong's forces later regrouped and defeated the KMT after World War II.
