Hamlet, one of William Shakespeare's most popular plays, tells the story of a Danish prince haunted by the ghost of his murdered father who wants revenge against the brother (Hamlet's uncle) who poisoned him and married his wife. Hamlet takes his time carrying out this objective, wanting to make sure that the ghost really is his father before embarking on such a bloody mission, but there is no shortage of violence in this tragedy--by play's end, every significant character except Horatio lies dead.

The role of Hamlet was originally portrayed by Richard Burbage, chief tragedian of the Lord Chamberlain's Men. At 4,042 lines, Hamlet is the longest of Shakespeare's plays.
