More info About: Harpsichord after Michael Mietke
Harpsichord after Michael Mietke  >  new window

By the time Michael Mietke was building instruments in his workshop on the outskirts of Berlin in the early 1700s the harpsichord already had over two centuries worth of repertoire. During the Middle Ages a key mechanism with quill plectra was added to to the triangular psaltery to create an early form of the harpsichord. The first evidence of this instrument is from written accounts: in 1367, John I of Aragon commissioned his ambassadors to find someone to play the exaquir, an instrument like an organ whose sound was produced by strings; and in 1404, Eberhard Cersne mentions three different stringed instruments with keyboards. For the entire 15th century we have only pictorial depictions, but they are numerous and arise from all parts of Europe. It is clear from these artistic representations that various mechanisms were used to pluck the strings.
