English poet Robert Browning was born in a suburb of London on May 7, 1812. He wrote his first book of poetry at the age of twelve, and was fluent in four languages by the age of fourteen. At sixteen, he began his studies at University College in London, but left after only one year. In 1845 he met Elizabeth Barrett who he would marry one year later. Although Browning pursued his literary ambitions for the next fifteen years, it was not until after his wife's death in 1861, and his subsequent move back to London, that he began to achieve critical acclaim. The Ring and the Book, a long blank-verse poem based on a 1690s murder case and published in 1868 was probably Browning's most successful poetic achievement during his lifetime. Robert Browning continued to produce poetry until his death on December 12, 1889. He was buried in Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey....
